What Should I Do Next? Scaffolding Blood Bank Case Studies

From the 2021 Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference (CLEC) - Recorded February 26, 2021
Presented by Grace Leu-Burke, MS, MT(ASCP)

This presentation will show how to scaffold blood bank case studies to evolve as they would naturally occur in the clinical lab, allowing student decisions to dictate what the next step would be, including missteps. Using this approach, the instructor can engage students as together they decide, “What to do next.”

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Develop strategies in presenting blood bank case studies that have a variety of outcomes based on routine or STAT status
  2. Develop blood bank case studies with potentially spurious results encouraging discussion on when to repeat before running the panel
  3. Identify what is meant by scaffolding case studies and how it can provide multiple avenues for student decision making and discussion
