The Value of Standardization During A Crisis Response

LTG (Dr) Ronald Place will discuss the Department of Defense’s efforts to standardize laboratory management practices across Army, Navy, and Air Force military hospitals around the world in order to enhance the patient experience and improve outcomes. Using strategies developed in 2018 and 2019, LTG Place will show how these efforts were accelerated, tested, and proven during the COVID-19 pandemic response. He will also explain how these strategies included integration of laboratory data from the civilian sector.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the mission responsibilities of laboratory services in support of military forces in both peacetime and wartime
  • Recognize the value of laboratory standardization in crisis response, particularly when access to timely and accurate data is required for national leaders
  • Identify the patient-centered improvements that accumulate when policies and practices are standardized across a geographically dispersed population
