Laboratory Safety and Infection Control

Maintaining a safe work environment is everyone’s responsibility. Employers are required to provide laboratory safety training for professionals with a variety of titles/responsibilities (e.g., laboratory assistant, phlebotomist, laboratory tech or medical laboratory scientist, or medical laboratory technician) depending on the place of employment. In a healthcare facility, identifying potential physical, chemical, or biological hazards begins with the education and training of staff. Laboratory personnel must be trained to both identify potential hazards they may encounter while performing job-related duties, and to practice and adhere to critical procedures to prevent accidents or injuries associated with these hazards.
