What Happens after Clinical Testing? Behind the Scenes on Whole Genome Sequencing for SARS‐CoV‐2 Variants and other Adventures in Surveillance Testing

From the 2022 Joint Annual Meeting (recorded 6/28/2022)
Presented by Amy Bogue, MLS(ASCP)CM, SM(ASCP)CM, Jeffrey Kugelman, PhD, Matthew Conte, PhD, Kimberly Bishop-Lilly, PhD, Anthony Fries, PhD and Christopher Myers, PhD

Discover how clinical specimens are selected for sequencing and variant analysis in military labs. Considerable planning is required to align the military’s unique requirements for a highly mobile force with Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiatives and other Global Emerging Infections Surveillance (GEIS) stakeholders and partners. Get an overview of GEIS and the integration with clinical specimen submissions. Discuss your questions with a knowledgeable panel of representatives from several large military laboratories with a mixture of clinical and research testing missions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the scope of work done by the DoD for emerging infectious disease surveillance at several large military labs with whole genome sequencing capabilities.
  • Identify the criteria used in selecting specimens for SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequencing and variant analysis.
  • Discuss surveillance questions or questions about SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequencing with a panel of representatives from large Army, Navy and Air Force labs.
