The Importance of Global Health Education in the Medical Laboratory Science Community

From the 2022 Joint Annual Meeting (recorded 6/29/2022)
Presented by Jessica Brashear, MS, MLS(ASCP)CM and Vicki Freeman PhD, MLS(ASCP)CM, SCCM

Healthcare is a global issue with the laboratory an essential part. While the importance of the clinical laboratory is well established in resource abundant countries, many are unfamiliar with the availability of laboratory diagnostic tests in resource-poor and developing countries, let alone the challenges of implementing and sustaining diagnostics in these areas. This session will highlight the importance of promoting MLS student and professional involvement in global health education as an essential part of combating this lack of information and awareness.

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Present the global health competencies and describe current global health initiatives
  • Discuss the advantages and barriers to student participation
  • Engage in conversation on ways to increase both faculty, professional and student participation.
