LEI: The Affective Domain in Laboratory Education


In education, there are three domains of learning: cognitive, psychomotor and affective. The first two are very concrete and the bedrock of our profession in clinical laboratory science. The affective domain, however, is more abstract, yet an important curricular component to teach and assess professionalism, values, and attitudes. In this presentation, the author will help educators to design, teach and evaluate the affective domain. The presentation is excellent for new educators as well as seasoned educators who may learn additional ways to teach and evaluate in the affective area.


Upon completion of this self-study course, participants will be able to:
  • Summarize the general focus of the three domains of learning.
  • List the levels of complexity within each of the three domains of learning.
  • Describe each level of complexity within the affective domain.
  • Identify key verbs within each level of complexity in the affective domain.
  • Identify laboratory‐related applications for each level of complexity within the affective domain.
  • Formulate appropriate affective domain objectives.
  • Compare and contrast various assignments targeting the affective domain, including sequencing, feedback, academic impact, and time/workload considerations.
  • Examine approaches for developing and implementing affective domain evaluation mechanisms.


This self-study is P.A.C.E. ® accredited. The instruction level for this activity is Intermediate. One (1) P.A.C.E. ® contact hours and one (1) Florida credit hours in the area General (Education) will be awarded to participants. ASCLS P.A.C.E.® is accepted by the ASCP/ASCLS/AGT Board of Certification and all states, including Florida and California, as an approved provider of continuing education for recertification and licensure. ASCLS is an approved provider with CE Broker for Florida licensees.
