From the 2023 Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference
(Recorded 3/2/2023)
Presented by Emily Matthys, MS,
MLS(ASCP)CM, and Deborah Fox, PhD,
MLS(ASCP)
This session includes two presentations:
Low Cost Activities for Simulation Labs
To meet the needs of our students, and to stay aligned with accreditation standards, we created a ‘simulated’ microbiology laboratory in our university-based lab. Operating a simulated laboratory experience comes with a great deal of monetary cost. In this session we will outline some cost-saving activities/resources that we incorporated into our curriculum.
Simulation Scenarios: From
Disaster to Transfusion
This presentation will explore two interprofessional simulation scenarios performed within a Simulated Environment Teaching Hospital (SETH). Both a campus-wide disaster simulation and a transfusion reaction simulation will be discussed. This session will also identify challenges and opportunities related to simulation.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be
able to:
- Discuss a variety of low to no-cost simulation activities that meet student performance objectives.
- Examine NMU Simulation Lab organizational tools.
- Incorporate low cost activities/resources/tools into your school’s curriculum or simulated lab.
- Describe the use of a campus-wide disaster simulation within an interprofessional University-based setting.
- Describe the use of a transfusion reaction simulation within an interprofessional University-based setting.
- Identify challenges and opportunities related to simulation.
