Focus on Pre-Analytic Processes

From the 2023 Joint Annual Meeting (recorded 6/29/2023)
Presented by Jennifer Marin, MS, MLS(AMT) and Rochelle Hase, MHA, MLS(ASCP)

Featuring two 30-minute presentations:
Platelet Collection Process Improvement Project
In-house platelet collections are critical at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) because German national platelets are not FDA equivalent. This session will review how LRMC was able to significantly reduce or eliminate purchase of German platelets to become a self-sufficient collection center.

Virtual Reality in the Draw Room
Some patients require three mins to have their blood drawn; others require five to eight times that. What are you doing about the extensive time it takes to draw kids, anxious patients, or combative patients? Have you considered virtual reality? It's cheap, easy, and it works.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the challenges of PLT production in a Foreign Territory. Review of current PLT Collection Practices at ASBBC-EUR. Discuss mitigation of challenges to improve collection products.
  • Identify a new way to enhance the patient experience. Discuss a course of action to reduce staff and patient harm. Identify a way to reduce unnecessary staffing requirements.
