This presentation will
examine the concepts of benchmarking and the use of peer comparison
benchmarking and patient safety indicators to monitor all phases of laboratory
services and their impact on patient safety.
National studies on patient safety, the concerns that have arisen from
these studies and the role of laboratory services in improving patient safety
and care will be discussed. A new ASCLS
Patient Safety Benchmark Peer Reporting Program that is in the final stages of
development will be described.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be
able to
- Define benchmarking and the four types used in health care
- Describe the role laboratory services and processes play in safe patient care
- Evaluate the elements of an effective Benchmark Peer Reporting Program (using patient safety indicators, peer group comparison, best practice sharing) for use in your laboratory
