    Drew Fayram has managed the laboratory safety program and served as the Biological Safety Officer at the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa since 2015. He oversees laboratory biosafety and biosecurity operations for a tier 1 select agent-registered BSL3 diagnostic laboratory and other BSL1-3 laboratory spaces. He has led the biological threat preparedness program since 2020, focusing on public health and healthcare laboratory capacity for detecting and responding to bioterrorism events. In this role, he performs diagnostic testing for agents of bioterrorism, conducts outreach activities to clinical diagnostic laboratories throughout Iowa, and offers training and consultation opportunities in the areas of laboratory detection of bioterrorism agents, biosafety, and biosecurity.

    Drew has been a member of the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) Biosafety and Biosecurity Committee since 2017. He is a Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) through the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA) International.

    Drew earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Wartburg College (Iowa) and a Master of Science degree in microbiology from The University of Iowa. He also completed an APHL/CDC Emerging Infectious Disease Laboratory Fellowship in 2013-2014.
